What the heck is the build out line?
U8, U9, U10

Understanding the Build-Out Line in U9/U10 Soccer

What is the Build-Out Line?
The build-out line is a rule used in U9 and U10 soccer to help young players learn how to pass and play out from the back, instead of just kicking the ball far down the field. It is drawn across the field about halfway between the goal box and the center line.

When is the Build-Out Line Used?
  • When the goalkeeper has the ball (either from a save or goal kick).
  • It gives the goalie and defenders time and space to start play.

What Happens?
  1. The opposing team must move behind the build-out line.
  2. The goalkeeper passes or rolls the ball to a teammate.
  3. Once the ball is played, the opposing team can cross the line and start defending.
  4. The goalkeeper cannot not drop kick.

Why Use the Build-Out Line?
  • Encourages skill development and teamwork.
  • Reduces pressure on the goalkeeper.
  • Promotes controlled play instead of just kicking the ball away.

Quick Tips for Players & Parents:
  • Don’t pressure the goalie when they have the ball. Wait behind the build-out line.
  • Coaches and referees will help remind players.
  • This rule is there to help everyone learn and enjoy the game!
In the diagram below, note that sometimes our fields do not always have the penalty box, the smaller box in front of the goal.
